The Lottery

So I began this new unit with the students on The Lottery. I wrote around nine different lessons for this but was only able to complete are five of those. The students were uninterested and did not like any the things I did with them. Many of them all rooted for people to die in the story. Yes a lady is stoned but it was just annoying at how much they did not care about learning. I tried to make it fun with different voices and activities but nothing seemed to work. I finally decided they needed to be tested on The Lottery and the results did not surprise me. Only one boy  Khaleel was excited about the book and he got the highest grade.  Almost all of the student failed or just barely passed. And then they realized how important it was to care about what was being taught.

  1. I loved reading The Lottery in 11th grade. Even though now the only character I remember is Old Man Warner and him complaining. "I've been doing this for seventy-seven years blah blah blah." The majority of the class was surprised that the woman was stoned at the end.
